The scholarships presentation ceremony took place on 5 January, 2024 at MUBAS main campus in Blantyre. The total value is approximated at MK16 million which is targeting students who are pursuing ICT related programmes.
The Director of Student Affairs at MUBAS, Dr. Getrude Sitolo, expressed gratitude to Werkix for the scholarships as she pointed out that the donation will enable the beneficiaries to concentrate on their studies with a peace of mind as they will not have to worry about tuition fees.
“As MUBAS, we welcome this partnership as it will help the institution achieve its mission of developing human capital that can drive the pace of economic transformation at the local and global levels, thereby contributing to the attainment of Malawi’s 2063 agenda,” said the Director of Student Affairs.
Sitolo added that just as MUBAS offers programmes in ICT related fields, the sponsoring company commitment to support MUBAS ICT students will help the students in discovering their potential and explore innovations with peers in web and software development, cyber security, and networking.
Speaking in an interview, Mr. David Baliles, the co-founder of Werkix company, acknowledged the significant role that MUBAS is playing in training and producing ICT specialists. He further added that the scholarships will help Malawi to develop its own human resource in software management instead of relying on sourcing ICT expertise from other countries.
“We encourage the students to not just have the degree at the end of their education, but they should actually have a chance to explore innovative ideas from well experienced experts in software development, graphic designing and IT administrative works and be able to transform the country’s ICT landscape,” Baliles said.
Baliles also said that the financial assistance has been provided to inspire and motivate the students and give them a new view of life in the world of technology.
Besides the financial assistance, the students will be provided with internship and employment opportunities at Werkix once they graduate.
The two institutions hope to establish a long term partnership which may possibly lead to the establishment of an e-Learning academy at MUBAS for the benefit of the community.

Chairman of the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) Council, Professor George Kanyama Phiri, has commended MUBAS management for initiating various commercial endeavours that will assist the university in generating income and serving the Malawian public better. Kanyama Phiri made the remarks on 2 February 2024 when MUBAS council members toured some of the developmental projects taking place at the university. He also assured MUBAS management that the council will provide all necessary support to ensure that MUBAS can be self-sustaining. "MUBAS is sitting on a gold mine. The university has so many facilities and expertise that can be used by the public at a fee and help the university generate income. As a council, we will guide management on how we can tap into the vast resources at our disposal to sustain the operations of the university and serve the public better," Kanyama Phiri said. MUBAS is developing a University Innovation Pod (UniPod) with funding from the United Nations Development Fund (UNDP). The UniPod will create a space for innovators and creators to help solve social challenges through inventions and ideation. Once operational, the UniPod will revolutionize the innovation and creativity industry in Malawi. Apart from the UniPod, MUBAS is also setting up an industrial park which, apart from offering training, will also be producing tomato puree and fruit juices among its products. The council members also visited the mining engineering laboratories and were visibly impressed with the top-notch equipment available. Secretary for Education, Mrs Chikondano Mussa, who was part of the council team, encouraged MUBAS management to collaborate closely with the industry so that the facilities are fully utilised. "We must make sure that the main players in the construction industry and other related fields are aware of the various tests that these laboratories offer, let`s fully utilise these facilities," advised Mussa. MUBAS Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Ishmail Kosamu, assured the council members that the university will strive to utilise all the resources at its disposal to serve Malawians better. He said income generation was at the centre of the university’s strategic plan as government funding alone cannot sustain the operations of the university. As part of commercialising some of its activities to generate income, MUBAS is establishing a full-fledged commercial subsidiary to oversee the university’s investments.

Furthermore, the Malawi leader challenged the academia to create space for all innovative and skilled minds to enable them to explore their full potential to create economic independence for the citizenry. He said the UniPod innovation centre will give impetus to Malawian innovators, creators and entrepreneurs, and give them an extra drive to come up with different innovations that can transform their lives and offer solutions to the problems communities face. "Citizens of this country should be given a chance to explore their ideas and gain economic independence. Economically liberated people feel free to criticize even the government when it comes up with bad policies because they are not afraid," Chakwera added. Chakwera then urged the youth to utilize the spaces being created for ideation such as the UniPod so that they gain economic liberation and remain focused and avoid being distracted by negativity that is propagated by some sections of the Malawi society. She assured Malawians that the establishment of the UniPod signals the beginning of prosperity for the country and urged the country’s leadership to create an environment where every citizen should have a chance at economic upliftment regardless of their background. "Many of our youth are ready to provide ideas and solutions that can assist this country and they do this not to enrich themselves but to transform their communities so let us give them support," Eziakonwa added. MUBAS Vice Chancellor, Associate Professor Nancy Chitera expressed gratitude to the Malawi government and UNDP for providing support towards the successful establishment of the UniPod at the university.
